Kapila Rathnasinghe & Co already had a website. It existed, and that was about the extent of it. Behind it sat five service lines, a separate company secretarial entity, and engagements across thirteen sector categories spanning private, non-governmental and public clients. Almost none of that was structured or visible.

The firm's ambition was international. Donor-funded programmes, international trading businesses, cross-border organisations: clients who would form a view of the practice without visiting Colombo and without any local knowledge to draw on.

Credibility had to travel

A domestic client can ask around. An overseas one cannot. For a reader with no access to reputation, everything supporting a decision has to be present on the page and checkable there. That is a structural requirement rather than a matter of tone, and it is what the old site had never been built to carry.

A reader who can verify something does not need to be persuaded of it.

What that required

Three decisions followed, and each of them had to hold inside the professional conduct rules that govern how a chartered accountancy practice may present itself.

The full operation, laid out. Five service lines each given their own page, the sister company secretarial entity given its own presence, and thirteen sector categories set out explicitly across private, non-governmental and public clients. A reader sees the practice rather than a summary of it.

A registrations page carrying the institute, the year of election, the registration numbers and the renewal dates, with supporting documentation offered on request. An overseas client can verify the firm independently, which is exactly what they will want to do first.

Sector pages written in the language a client would use about their own circumstances, so a donor-funded programme or a manufacturer can place themselves quickly and judge the fit without needing it argued.

Publishing as evidence

The conduct rules limit what a practice may claim about itself. They place no limit on what it may explain. The news portal carries regulatory updates and practical guidance on audit, tax, reporting and corporate obligations, which demonstrates competence rather than asserting it, and is considerably more convincing than a claim would have been.

It also compounds. Each update is a page answering a question somebody is already searching for, and search is the most direct route a professional practice has to a client it has never met. The site was built around that intent rather than around traffic.

The whole of it, website, news portal and search, was delivered in a matter of weeks. It reads quietly and formally, which is what an international client expects of an audit practice, and what the rules require in any event.
